Jim Butterfield, 6502 Programming Guru, Has Passed Away
I feel like the angel of death has been quite busy this week as another influential person has passed away. For those of you who do not know, Jim Butterfield was one of the preeminent authors and programmers for the 6502 CPU going all the way back to the MOS Technologies KIM-1 kit computer.
Why Photoshop doesn’t provide secure metadata

Certain feature requests come up over and over, and customers wonder why Adobe doesn’t address them. In many cases it’s a matter of time, resources, and priorities (i.e. good idea, we just haven’t gotten there yet). In other cases, however, there are conceptual issues that make addressing the request impractical or impossible.
One of those cases concerns something that seems simple: letting Photoshop users apply copyright & other info, then lock it so that it can’t be removed. Photographers in particular request this capability year in and year out. Unfortunately there are good reasons why things don’t work as desired. If you’re interested in the details, read on for an explanation from Photoshop architect Russell Williams.
If I understand what you’re looking for — a way to distribute your image so that somebody can’t strip out the copyright, the […]

Written by PhotoShop News.Adobe Updates Lightroom to version 1.1
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 1.1 is now available as a free upgrade for existing users, with added functionality and support for Windows Vista. Lightroom 1.1 adds a flexible image management system for multi-computer workflows, improved noise reduction and sharpening, and raw file support for 13 additional digital cameras from leading manufacturers including Canon, Nikon, Olympus, and Phase One.
“Although the beta period has ended, we are happy to say that Photoshop Lightroom continues to incorporate user feedback with this latest update,” says Tom Hogarty, product manager for Photoshop Lightroom. “We are committed to continuing this partnership with our customer base by working together to make a program that best suits their digital imaging workflow needs.”
Lightroom enables professional photographers to import, manage and present large volumes of digital photographs helping them spend more time behind the lens and less time at the computer. Improvements in Lightroom 1.1 include a new image management system […]

Written by PhotoShop News.Note About Chris Benoit’s Death
This isn't the appropriate forum for a post about the death of a wrestler, but I feel compelled to link to the post I wrote on my personal blog. Please go read it: "Shock and Dismay at the Death of Chris Benoit and His Family".
Apple’s Safari joke just keeps on giving…
Apple-fanatics, pick up your crow on aisle 11, next to the Apple TV display. Free beverages are available in that aisle to help with ingestion. There you can find the details on yet another (really stupid) buffer overflow in Safari for Windows.
Book Writing Hiatus for PhotoshopNews
As some of may know, with Bruce’s passing I’ve taken up the responsibility to update Real World Camera Raw in Adobe Photoshop CS3-Bruce’s best-selling book series all about Camera Raw.
As a result, I’m going to take a break from PhotoshopNews while I concentrate on finishing up the book. So, from now until the beginning of August, 2007, PhotoshopNews will get only weekly attention when there’s a big story about Photoshop, Lightroom or Adobe in general. Some of my PixelGenius partners have volunteered to pick up some of the slack but rather than trying to do a daily update, look for weekly postings.
The book is due to be released the beginning of September, 2007.

Written by PhotoShop News. How To: Load Gmail Faster
Hi guys, of late, gmail has been loading very slowly for me. This means that, when ever I give my username and password at the login screen, after successful login, the screenshot shown below displays.
![]()
[Click to see a bigger version]
When that happens we hate to wait for infinitely long times. So, I discovered a simple hack through which you can eliminate that screen.
Notice that the address bar contains the URL of the format http://mail.google.com/mail?auth=DQAA etc.
Now, all you have to do is, change the “http://” in your browser’s address bar to “https://”, which means the URL will now look like https://mail.google.com/mail?auth=DQAA etc. Press Enter. Gmail loads faster.
Dave Polaschek Talks about Printing from Photoshop CS3
Some people were taken by surprise by Photoshop CS3’s new Print dialog. Some weren’t pleased by the new behavior. So, John Nack asked Dave to say a few words on John’s Adobe Blog. Click here to read the entire post.
Dave says: “The change which seems to be causing the most consternation is the change from application-wide page setup to document-specific page setup in Photoshop on Windows. This is the way the Mac version has always behaved, and was the way the Windows version of Photoshop was intended to behave way back in the day, but for one reason or another, that never quite got hooked up.
With CS3, I was brought in to “improve and modernize the printing code,” and part of that effort has been trying to get the Mac and Windows versions more in sync. In the short run, this means trying to rip out code that behaved differently […]

Written by PhotoShop News.Adobe Icon Man – John Nack
You know you’re getting real famous when people start doing their own portraits of you-and here’s John Nack, Photoshop Product Manager rendered in Adobe Icons. If ya thought there was some “commentary” about the original icons, I wondered what might be next-well, John’s been “Icon’ed” by Greek illustrator Charis Tsevis (profile, portfolio).
On his blog John writes: I mentioned his work in January & was delighted to receive this image in return. It’s now hanging on the Photoshop floor and is being creatively desecrated by passersby (devil horns, soul patch, and probably more added by now)
Charis uses Photoshop and Synthetik Studio Artist.
