POSDATA G100 gaming device

POSDATA from Korea has unveiled its G100 gaming device recently, bringing WiMAX connectivity to the world of portable gaming. Features include a 4" touchscreen LCD that slides open to reveal a game pad underneath, a design that's inspired by the deluge of smartphones that flood our market today. Additional connectivity options include Bluetooth and WiFi, making this perfect for surfing on-the-go or pulling up a cheat from the Internet when you're stuck in a game somewhere. No word on pricing, although the G100 is tipped to be released in the US by the end of the year - hopefully it will be in time for the holiday season. Do you forsee this overtaking the PSP and Nintendo DS Lite in the long run? Hopefully the software (read: games) will be able to give this a longer shelf life than the Gizmondo...

Bipedal robot jumps like a frog

Bipedal robot jumps like a frog
Robotics has advanced to such a stage where the Japanese have invented the first bipedal robot in the world that can jump like a frog. Dubbed Mowgli, this creation from the University of Tokyo can jump approximately 50cm into the air with a perfect landing. This was made possible by the inclusion of artificial muscles in the legs that are driven by compressed air unlike traditional robots. Mowgli measures 1.2m tall and does not only wow curious onlookers with its ability to jump, but it can also kick a football to boot. Japan is still trying to develop flexible robots that are capable of acting as caregivers to humans as their population ages, and the Mowgli is but a small step towards that dream.

Digital Valve Cap makes it easy

Digital Valve Cap makes it easy

The Digital Valve Cap might be a concept, but it would surely come in handy should it ever enter production. This cap boasts a digital readout of the current tire pressure and relies on a small, built-in battery that is activated each time you press the cap, doing away with the need for a tire pressure gauge. Unfortunately, unless some sort of physical security system has been built into the Digital Valve Cap, expect these to disappear at a far faster rate compared to your standard valve caps on your mountain bike. Design credits go to John Wrightson for this.

Thermaltake DH102 chassis

Thermaltake DH102 chassis

Thermaltake Technology has just introduced the new DH102 chassis from its Digital Home range, boasting a high quality piano mirror coating front panel complete with a 7" touch panel display. While it looks sleek, you can be sure that it will amass fingerprints faster than dust bunnies make a colony inside. The touchscreen front LCD display provides users with fast and convenient access to media functions, while 10 hot key buttons and an easy-to-reach volume control knob is positioned strategically on the front panel. If you're one of the artsy types who must have aesthetically pleasing items in your home, the Thermaltake DH102 chassis would certainly go a long way in helping you achieve that vision.

Phone concept with landline qualities

Phone concept with landline qualities
Check out this cellphone concept that claims to feature landline qualities, where the opening in middle of the charger unit acts as a phone storage as well as charger. The ETNA handset fits onto the adapter which in turn is hooked up directly to an electrical socket, using induction to charge the handset as a color-coded ring on the charger tells the current charging status. The mobile charger can also be used to "hang up" the phone, giving you the flexibility to use this as a permanent phone either at home or at the office. Designed by Maxie Pantel, I don't think this will make an appearance at electronics stores anytime soon as consumers don't seem to be ready for such a product just yet.

Pentax Optio W30 review

Posted in Uncategorized by Kalle on the September 30th, 2007

The summer may be officially over, but the temperatures are still warm enough to cook an egg on the sidewalk and there’s enough time to hit the beach and soak up the sun. I like to frolic in the ocean and often times I wish I had a waterproof digital point-and-shoot to capture all my shenanigans while surfing. I’ve tried the disposables and the surf-specific cameras, but they’re awkward to use and picture quality is nothing to boast about. Is it too much to ask that someone manufacture a decent underwater digi that’s still worth using on dry land? Seriously, though, it can’t be that hard. There’s a bevy of very good point-and-shoots available on the market, but only a few underwater cameras and of those only one or two are worth the money. Many would argue that it’s better to spend a little extra and get a housing rather than wasting your money on an ok camera.

The Pentax Optio W30 is the latest addition to the waterproof line and I’ve spent more than enough time to realize it’s any waterman’s dream come true. We’ll take a quick look at the W30’s features before moving onto the goods. The W30 is encased in a full aluminum alloy shell that’s tough enough to withstand most of the abuse you can throw it into. Surfers won’t have to worry much unless they’re in shallow waters with a reef or rocky floor. Kayakers might want to steer clear of boulders and free divers probably shouldn’t take it any deeper than 10 feet and they’ll want to surface around the two-hour mark. But if you’re using the underwater mode to capture photos of mermaids and fishies then you’ll only be able to stay submerged for half an hour in 5 feet of h2o. There’s a bit more so keep reading to get the scoop on the W30.

Best of Digital Life 2007

Posted in Uncategorized by Kalle on the September 30th, 2007

Digital Life, one of the largest consumer technology and gaming events of the year, has finally ended today. Obviously, there were plenty of top-notch gadgets presented, and more, the gaming scene was really hardcore.

With that being said, here is my personal list about the best (and worst) of Digital Life 2007:

Dance Dance revolution

Dance Dance Revolution

Not a gadget per se, more of a competition of dancing and guitar related games. According to BG, there were “Grown men and women, hopping up and down, flailing their arms and more”. I think this is enough…

Namco shows the love for Pac-Man

Pac-Man

The popular Pac-Man game was available to be played in different gadgets – cellphones, iPods, and more – all thanks to Namco, the “arcade gaming powerhouse”

The Virtual Army Experience

Virtual Army Experience

Once again, another game being presented, but this time related to something serious – the army. Basically the Virtual Army Experience is what the name suggests, minus the real life injuries. The experience is based on a game made by America’s Army.
