New ‘Digital Arts’ Festival Fuses Art & Technology

Posted in Events by on the May 6th, 2008

dg5-600.jpg

Press Release: ALYS BEACH, Fla., May 6 /PRNewswire/ — A Florida beach resort town will host a unique festival on Labor Day weekend.

“Digital Graffiti at Alys Beach” was created to celebrate and promote the world’s most talented and innovative digital artists. But the event has a very unusual twist.

“We’re inviting digital artists from around the world to project their original artwork onto our town’s famous white walls,” said Kelli Arnold, Alys Beach’s Events Coordinator. “Our entire town will literally become their blank canvas.”

Sometimes referred to as “Photon Bombing,” “Guerilla Projection,” “Projection Bombing” or “Urban Projection,” underground artists around the globe have already been using the latest design, animation and projection technologies to cast their images onto skyscrapers and other urban structures, as a means of artistic expression.

“Some of the talent that we’re finding is truly stunning,” said Arnold.

To help lure that talent, Alys Beach has announced numerous award categories and over $5,000 in cash prizes, including a $2,500 “Best of Show” award. A certain number of qualified artists may also be eligible for cash stipends to help them attend the event.

The festival will be hosted by several celebrity and industry expert judges, including Alan Hunter — MTV’s very first “VeeJay,” co-host of the “Big 80’s” channel on Sirius Satellite Radio, and co-founder of the Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival, and Warren Heaton, an award-winning digital media artist and UCLA professor, whose film, video and interactive media projects include such clients as Adobe, Aquantive Microsoft, Concorde-New Horizons, DirecTV, Motor Entertainment and Walt Disney Imagineering.

Artists are encouraged to submit their original works of digital art for consideration as soon as possible. Entries may include new or existing abstract digital imagery, short films, photography, VJ sets, animations, YouTube videos, Adobe PhotoShop creations or entirely new interactive concepts. All subject matter is eligible for the festival, although a special $1,000 prize will be awarded to the best entry with a “green” or environmental theme. The deadline for all submissions is Friday, July 11, 2008. The festival will be held on the evening of Saturday, August 30, 2008.

Alys Beach is located in Florida’s panhandle on Scenic Highway 30A, between Destin and Panama City Beach, along what The New York Times said “may be the best beach in the continental U.S.” In April, Forbes.com named Alys Beach America’s “Best Spot for the Design-Savvy.”

For more information about Digital Graffiti at Alys Beach, visit www.alysbeach.com/DG , call toll-free 1-866-481-8387, or email events@alysbeach.com .

ABOUT ALYS BEACH

One of the most beautiful new towns in the world, Alys Beach’s extraordinary architectural vision drew inspirations from both Bermuda and the family courtyard homes of Antigua, Guatemala. When complete, the town will be home to over 600 villas, rowhouses, courtyard homes and family compound retreats, as well as numerous restaurants, parks and shops. All homes in Alys Beach are built to Fortified … For Safer Living® building standards, as certified by the Institute for Business & Home Safety, and are also built to the Green Home Designation Standard of the Florida Green Building Coalition.

“Alys Beach may be the most truly innovative community under construction in the United States today, and it will eventually be imitated everywhere,” said Andres Duany, who was ranked one of the Top 5 most influential people in home building by Builder magazine.

On the Road to Photoshop World-Orlando

Posted in Photoshop News, PSN Top Stories, Events by on the April 1st, 2008

No, I’m not going to Disney World…but I am in Orlando getting ready for the kick-off of this year’s Photoshop World.

The theme this year is THE EVOLUTION (probably because of the “evolution” of Photoshop) and rumor has it that Scott Kelby will be dressed as Captain Kirk and the staff will be the crew of the Starship Enterprise.

I’ve already run into Scott (not literally-I just saw him walking by on crutches). Seems Scott had a little accident. It’s either a 1)-a skiing accident while in the Swiss Alps, 2)-a kick boxing accident when delivering a vicious round kick or 3)-an unfortunate treadmill incident. We’ll investigate and report back so stay tuned…

Just found this story from Scott’s blog: I’m Heading to Photoshop World today. On Crutches!

Photo op by Peter Kennard

The camera never lies – or does it? Peter Kennard and Alexander Rodchenko have both manipulated images to undermine those in power. The results are subversive and unsettling, says Tom Lubbock

Source: The Independent

What is the power of images? Take this one. It shows Tony Blair, in shirt and tie, facing more or less front, and grinning hard, as he takes his own photo. But behind him the scene is entirely filled with the smoke and fire of a massive explosion, blowing the desert apart. Its detonation seems to be simultaneous with Blair’s snap.

Obviously it’s a composite image. It’s entitled Photo-Op and it was made a couple of years ago by our leading exponent of photomontage, Peter Kennard. The figure of a self-snapping Blair was extracted from a news photo (originally, what he had behind him was a group of children and naval cadets). It’s then been superimposed on a bit of shock-and-awe from Iraq.

The picture is a great coup. It catches Blair at his most Blairite – the casually contemporary guy, the publicity narcissist, in full grimace. And the whole scene is very nearly believable. It’s the kind of thing that Blair, in his boyish gung-ho silliness, could almost have done – gleefully snap himself, with his own war as a souvenir-backdrop. The composite is so seamlessly realistic that the eye can’t unpick it. This is no cut-and-paste collage. Photo-Op is made on Photoshop.

So what’s the power of this image? Well, it delivers a brilliant insult, in the way that it manages to condense a lot of suspicions about Blair’s character and priorities. And it plays a neat pictorial practical joke (which even a viewer who didn’t share those suspicions might enjoy). But for all that it’s morally apposite and visually clinching, Photo-Op doesn’t actually prove anything. For what can a montage prove?

Kennard has been taking images apart and fitting them together for almost 40 years. If you go to his retrospective at the Pump House Gallery in Battersea Park, you can see work going back to the early 1970s. There are attacks on the government of Edward Heath, illustrations for the Workers Press, old bits of artwork coming slightly unstuck. The causes may be fading history, but Kennard’s grim wit and graphic impact are already clear.

Ok, Probably Tonite Says Scott

Posted in Photoshop News, Events by on the February 12th, 2008

foxtvset.jpg

Scott Kelby wrote last week of Photoshop User TV’s premier on “real TV” but there seems to have been, uh, well, a technical glitch? However, today on his blog (Photoshop Insider) he posted “I somewhat hesitate to say this, but tonight, there is a more than a reasonable chance that at 1:30 am (same time in each time zone), Photoshop User TV will make it’s “real” television debut on Fox Business channel.”

Scott Kelby

So, if you’re up late tonite working on that last minute Photoshop project (or you have TiVo) you might check the listings and see if, as Scott says “you’ll be treated to either “The Photoshop Guys” or an informercial for “The Juicer” (which is what ran in our spot last week).”
